Electromyography (EMG) & Nerve Conduction Study (NCS)

Electrodiagnostic medicine evaluates nerve and muscle function and provides helpful information in the evaluation of the motor and sensory neurons, the nerve roots, the brachial and lumbar plexus, the peripheral nerves, the neuromuscular junction, and the muscles through either an electromyography (EMG) exam or a nerve conduction study (NCS).

To discover the source of your nerve and muscle pain, our doctors may perform an EMG exam or electromyogram. The test consists of a comprehensive neuromusculoskeletal exam, which tests how well signals travel along a nerve to select muscle fibers and helps find the cause of abnormal nerve and muscle function.

Nerve conduction velocity (NCV) is the speed at which electrical impulses travel through a nerve. An NCS is a diagnostic procedure that measures NCV to evaluate a nerve injury or damage caused by various injuries and conditions in adolescents and adults. The slower the NCV, the more likely the damage or injury to the nerve.

An NCS is conducted by placing an electrode on the skin over the nerve suspected of damage or injury. Additional electrodes are placed on the muscle tissue stimulated by the nerve. Electrical impulses are then sent through the primary electrode and into the skin. Please note, while the impulse is not dangerous, it may cause discomfort in some patients.

Whether you have radiating neck pain, back discomfort, physical numbness and weakness, muscle fatigue, or muscle cramping and tightening, our doctors will help find a solution to your ailments and help you get back to enjoying activities again.
