At Orthopaedic & Spine Clinic of Louisiana, we understand that osteoporosis and resulting fractures can limit your mobility, reduce your quality of life, and pose a number of other serious health risks. At our Center for Osteoporosis Management, we will evaluate these risks by conducting a full diagnostic assessment, which includes bone density and laboratory studies, after which our specialist will provide you with a treatment plan to optimize your bone health.

Bone Density Testing

The earlier you are tested for osteoporosis, the more bone you will have to preserve. Those who are at higher risk for osteoporosis include women over 50, women who had a hysterectomy or are on hormone medications, smokers, those with a family history of osteoporosis, and those taking prednisone or oral steroids. While women are four times more likely to suffer from osteoporosis, men can also develop this disease.

Bone density testing can:

Detect low bone density before a fracture occurs
Diagnose osteoporosis if you have already had a fracture
Determine your rate of bone loss if the test is conducted at regular intervals
Monitor osteoporosis treatment effects

The method used to measure bone density is known as dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, or DEXA, which is a painless, non-invasive procedure similar to X-ray imaging. When you undergo a DEXA test, the area being examined is exposed to two types of low-dose radiation (5 – 150 times less than a chest X-ray). One is absorbed by bones and the other by the body’s soft tissues. The difference between the results of these two numbers gives the bone density level.
